Behind the storefronts on Cannery Row

Cannery Row’s former industrial buildings now accommodate shops, cafes and hotels. Behind a welcoming shopfront, your operation may have a second stockroom, a service counter or supplies used by staff. Tell us what belongs to each part of the business. A count should account for those different uses without assuming everything in the building is merchandise available for sale.

Separate products sold from products used

A packaged snack sold at a counter and the same product supplied to a guest room can leave stock through different records. Explain how your business records internal use, complimentary items and customer sales. For food or beverage operations, discuss ingredients and open containers as well as sealed retail packages. PIA can count partial quantities; agreeing the unit makes the result understandable alongside your purchasing records.

Make the next owner’s starting position clear

During a Monterey business transfer, a decorated display can mix saleable products, reusable fixtures and borrowed pieces. Identify those groups before deciding what belongs in the merchandise count and asset record. Bring any stockroom or off-site storage locations into the discussion too. The useful starting point is a physical record tied to an agreed scope, with buyer and seller supplying the inclusion and pricing decisions.

Questions about your Monterey count

How should a Monterey shop handle assembled gift baskets?

Explain whether your records carry a basket as one product or keep its contents as individual items. Identify baskets already assembled so their contents are not also treated as loose shelf stock. Keep unused packaging separate from finished merchandise.

Should hotel or restaurant furnishings appear in the merchandise total?

Furniture, kitchen equipment and reusable service items usually answer a different question from saleable stock. Discuss an asset count alongside the merchandise inventory and identify rented or vendor-owned items so ownership is clear in the agreed scope.
